Introduction to Reflexology

Brief history of Reflexology

Reflexology is an ancient form of massage dating as far back as the Egyptians and was introduced to the United States in 1913 by William Fitzgerald an ear, nose and throat specialist. He claimed that applying pressure had an aesthetic effect on other areas of the body.

Reflexology was further developed by Eunice Ingham, a nurse and physiotherapist in the 1930’s and 1940’s. She discovered that pressure on various points on the feet helped relieve pain and that all the nerves end in the feet.

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a non-intrusive complementary therapy that treats the whole of the body through the stimulation of certain reflex points located on the hands, feet, ears and face.

By using light pressure to massage each of the reflex points, tension can be released, energy blockages removed, blood circulation stimulated, and promotion of the healing of body and mind can commence.

How can it help me?

Reflexology stimulates the body’s own healing process in order to keep it balanced. It works by correcting any imbalances that can occur through illness, accident, disease or even lifestyle.

Reflexology helps maintain and restore health and is a safe, natural and gentle therapy that can be used on anybody, including the infirm, the elderly and even babies.

How does it work?

It works by stimulating these points and areas with finger and thumb pressure and manipulation which may improve nerve function and blood supply. This may help alleviate stress and other health problems and restore balance throughout the body.

What can it help with?

Reflexology has been particularly successful at helping to manage pain, ease stress / anxiety and balance hormones. Reflexology treatments can provide a wonderful way to relax and unwind from the stresses of our busy lifestyles.

Is it relaxing?

Reflexology is an extremely relaxing therapy which encourages the body to self-heal. After illness or stress vital energy pathways in the body become blocked preventing the body from functioning normally.  Reflexology can help restore the body to its natural state and encourages healing. It is a deeply relaxing treatment which provides you with the time and space to release stress and unwind.

What are the benefits of Reflexology?

Reflexology is becoming a very popular therapy, which must be experienced in order to be appreciated as it is a wonderfully relaxing experience. The benefits to the body from taking time out of everyday stresses and receiving regular one-hour treatments are numerous and include:

Deep relaxation

Helps relieve tension

Helps to reduce stress

Increased wellbeing

Improves sleep

Improves mood

Balances emotions

Feeling happier

Reflexologists cannot claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe. Reflexology can be used safely alongside standard healthcare to promote better health and wellbeing, but if you are currently having any medical treatment please speak to your GP before booing an appointment.

Your initial consultation and first treatment

The first treatment is usually the longest as this involves a full consultation including discussing your medical history and lifestyle. This is important so that I can have a better understanding of your situation. After removing your tights/socks and shoes and seating you in my comfortable reclining chair, I will examine your feet, cleanse them, relax them and then start the treatment. At this point, all you need to do, is simply relax in the chair, listen to the relaxation music and enjoy the treatment.

Some areas may feel tender or uncomfortable, this tenderness signals to me that there is an energy imbalance in that area of the body. I will then work on this area to relieve the congestion. However, as reflexology is generally a very relaxing and pleasant therapy, you probably won’t even notice. Once the treatment has completed, I will be able to advise you how many treatments you are likely to need. These will be spread over several weeks to enable the body to heal itself effectively and each treatment will be around an hour in length.
